Why Puppies Go Home at Week 9 in Singapore
Homecoming day is set by biology, not by marketing. Our puppies go home about a week after their second vaccination, at around week 9, and that timing is one of the fastest ways to tell a careful seller from a careless one. Here is the logic from the breeder's side of the handover.
When can a puppy go home in Singapore?
About a week after its second core vaccination, at around week 9 of age. The core schedule runs at weeks 6, 8 and 12 with deworming at every visit, so a week-9 puppy goes home protected by two jabs and finishes the third with its new owner's vet.
The schedule that sets the date
Week 6 brings the first core vaccination and deworming. Week 8 brings the second, with deworming again. Protection is not instant: the immune response needs roughly a week after that second jab to build, which is exactly the week the puppy spends finishing its farm routine before homecoming. Week 12's third vaccination then happens with you, an optional fourth at week 16 follows if your vet advises it, and the booster runs annually from year one. Why not week 6 or 7?
The immunity gap
A puppy between jabs one and two is at its most vulnerable to parvovirus and distemper, and a house move, new floors, new hands, new stress, is maximum exposure at minimum defence. Waiting one week past the second jab closes most of that gap before the puppy ever leaves.
The littermate classroom
Weeks 6 to 8 with mother and siblings are where a puppy learns bite inhibition and dog manners. Those lessons cannot be taught later by a human; a puppy removed early often shows it for years in mouthing and poor dog-to-dog reading.
Which makes handover age a seller-quality test you can run in one question: "how old will the puppy be at collection, and can I see the vaccination booklet?" Your first 48 hours after the handover
The week-9 date does half the work; your first two days do the rest. Keep the world small: one room, the crate, the toilet spot, and the same food the farm fed (switching kibble on day one buys you diarrhoea on day two). Visitors can wait a week; the puppy has just lost its littermates and does not need an audience while it recalibrates.

The date is set by the vaccination calendar rather than by the seller, which is exactly why it is worth checking against the booklet.
Why not take a puppy home at 6 or 7 weeks?
Two reasons. Immunity: before and shortly after the second jab, protection against parvovirus and distemper is still building, and a house move is maximum exposure at minimum defence. Development: weeks 6 to 8 with mother and littermates are where bite inhibition and dog-to-dog manners are learned, and a puppy removed early pays for it in behaviour later.
Is it a red flag if a seller offers a 6-week-old puppy?
Yes. A seller handing over before the second vaccination is either skipping jabs or skipping the wait, and both save the seller money at the puppy’s expense. Ask any seller for the puppy’s date of birth and vaccination booklet, and count the weeks yourself. Early handover also robs the puppy of its littermate weeks, so the cost shows up twice: first in health risk, later in bite inhibition and dog manners.
Why does the week-12 vaccination happen with the new owner?
It puts your own vet’s hands on the puppy within its first weeks home, continuing the booklet the farm started. You get an independent professional look at the puppy you bought, and the vaccination series finishes on schedule. An optional fourth jab at week 16 may follow if your vet advises it, and the booster is annual from year one.
What if I cannot collect the puppy at week 9 exactly?
A short wait is fine; the schedule is a floor, not a ceiling. The puppy simply stays on its routine at the farm, and the week-12 jab either happens with us before a later handover or with your vet after. Tell us your dates on WhatsApp and we plan around them.
When can my new puppy meet other dogs and go outside?
Full protection arrives about one to two weeks after the final core vaccination, at week 12 or week 16 if a fourth jab is given. Until then, keep to clean private spaces: carry the puppy outdoors, host vaccinated adult dogs at home, and skip dog parks, grass verges and void decks where unvaccinated dogs pass through.
Does the week-9 timing change for different breeds?
No. The vaccination schedule is set by canine immunology, not breed, so a Maltipoo and a Golden Retriever run the same weeks 6, 8 and 12 calendar and the same week-9 homecoming. What differs by breed is everything after: energy, grooming and training load, which each breed guide covers.
"But overseas breeders hand over at 8 weeks": the timing debate, settled
Eight weeks is the number most international guides quote, and it is not wrong so much as incomplete. The 8-week convention marks the earliest age most jurisdictions consider separation acceptable; it says nothing about vaccination timing. Singapore's schedule puts the second core jab at week 8 itself, and immunity from any vaccination needs roughly a week to consolidate. Hand a puppy over on jab day and it changes homes at the exact trough of its protection, into a new environment full of new surfaces. Waiting the extra week costs seven days of cuteness and buys the consolidation window; that is the whole trade, and it is not close.
The week-9 handover also moves one vaccination into your ownership on purpose. If a seller completes all three jabs before handover, at week 12 or later, you get a more "finished" puppy but lose the early-vet-relationship benefit and four extra weeks of the socialisation window at home. If a seller hands over before week 8's jab, you inherit a medical schedule mid-stream with maximum risk. Week 9 is the point where the immunity maths, the socialisation window and the vet-handover logic all cross, which is why it is our standard rather than our marketing.
