What is the most common cause of death in Cavapoos?
The honest answer is the heart, and it comes from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel side. Mitral valve disease is well recognised in that breed, it is degenerative, and a Cavapoo carries half its genetics from that line.
We publish no percentage here, because we do not hold a figure we can stand behind. What we can tell you is what to ask and what to do, which is more useful than a statistic you cannot check.
- Ask about the Cavalier parent's heart: whether it has been examined, by whom, and when.
- Ask about the grandparents on that side: a breeder selecting for hearts will know, and will tell you.
- Book a heart check from middle age: a vet listening to the heart yearly is the whole early-warning system.
- Know the early signs: a cough that shows up at rest, tiring on walks the dog used to manage, or breathing faster while asleep.
A seller who cannot say anything about the Cavalier parent's heart is a seller who did not look. That is the answer to the question, not a reassurance.
None of this makes the Cavapoo a bad dog to own. It makes it a dog with a known question attached, and known questions are the manageable kind.
F1, F1b, F2: what the generation on a listing means
Those labels appear on almost every Cavapoo listing and almost nobody explains them. They describe the cross, and what they really predict is the coat.
What each generation is, and what it does to the coat
The counterintuitive part is that curlier means more work, not less. An F1b sheds less because the hair stays in the coat, and hair that stays in the coat is hair that mats.
Coat type also varies inside one litter, which is why we photograph each puppy separately and why seeing them in person tells you more than any label on a listing does.
Can a Cavapoo be left alone for 6 hours?
An adult can, occasionally, with a walk before and after and something to do in between. Every working day, no. Both parent breeds were selected as companions, and this cross does badly with long stretches alone, which shows up as barking, chewing and indoor toileting rather than as quiet sadness.
There is a physical limit underneath the behavioural one. A rough guide is one hour per month of age, so an eight-week puppy needs a break roughly every two hours and cannot be asked to hold on through a morning.
- 8 weeks: about two hours between toilet breaks, day or night.
- 4 months: about four hours, and still not a full working day.
- Adult: six to eight hours overnight is normal, and daily six-hour stretches alone are a different ask.
- What fixes it: a midday walker, a neighbour, a family member, or a daycare day or two a week.
Are Cavapoos high maintenance dogs?
On the coat, yes. Low-shedding is true and is not the same as low-maintenance: the loose hair stays in the coat rather than on your floor, and that is exactly why it mats.
Brush several times a week, to the skin rather than over the top, and book a groomer every four to six weeks. Behind the ears, under the front legs and around the collar are where mats form first.

- Eyes: keep the hair trimmed back so the dog can see and the eyes stay clear.
- Teeth: a small mouth means crowding, and dental disease by middle age unless you brush.
Do Cavapoos bark a lot?
Moderately, and usually for a reason. This is not a yappy cross by default, and most Cavapoos settle into announcing the door and then stopping.
The barking that becomes a neighbour complaint is the sustained kind that starts after you leave. If someone in your block tells you your dog barks all day and you have never heard it, believe them and treat it as a separation problem.

What is the lifespan of a Cavapoo?
12–15 years, which is good for a small dog. Three things move it: weight, teeth and the heart, and all three are partly in your hands.
A lean Cavapoo with clean teeth and a yearly heart check from middle age is a dog whose problems get caught early. That is the whole of the advice, and it is worth more than any supplement.
Health: what to ask about before you pay
A cross inherits from both sides. That is the part hybrid vigour talk gets wrong, and it is why the questions below cover two breeds rather than one.
Heart
Mitral valve disease on the Cavalier side. Ask what the Cavalier parent's heart examination showed, and when it was done.
Knees
Patellar luxation is the small-breed joint risk and it sits on both sides of this cross. Keep the dog lean and off high furniture while it grows.
Eyes
Both parent breeds have inherited eye conditions worth asking about. A breeder selecting for them will know what the parents were tested for.
Ears
Drop ears plus hair in the canal plus Singapore humidity is how ear infections start. Routine, not occasional.

When your puppy comes home
The timeline is set by the vaccination schedule, not by us. Core vaccinations run at weeks 6, 8 and 12, with an optional dose at week 16, and deworming happens at every visit.
- Weeks 6 and 8: the first two core doses, at the farm.
- Around week 9: homecoming, a week after the second dose.
- Week 12, and optionally week 16: with you and your own vet.
- Year one onward: an annual booster.
The first month with a Cavapoo
- Handling from day one: paws, ears and coat daily, so the groomer is never a fight.
- Practise short absences early: five minutes, then twenty, before the habit forms in either direction.
- The bladder clock: roughly one hour per month of age between toilet breaks.
- Sleeping: start the bed near you and move it out gradually rather than shutting the door on night one.
Teacup Cavapoos: what you are actually being sold
There is no teacup Cavapoo puppy, at any price. It is a label attached to undersized dogs, and in a cross that already carries an inherited heart risk, breeding deliberately for smallness stacks the odds further against the dog.
We do not sell them, price them or advertise them, and a seller charging a premium for one is charging you extra for a fragility.
How to buy a Cavapoo ethically in Singapore
- 1Check the licence. Cavapoo Singapore breeders are licensed individually, so search the AVS public registry for the seller's number. Ours is BR25052, held by William Goh Pet Farm LLP.
- 2Ask about both parent breeds. A cross has two health histories, not one. The heart question belongs to the Cavalier side and the knees and eyes belong to both.
- 3See the puppy in person. Viewing is by appointment. Coat type varies inside a litter, so the photograph is a starting point rather than the decision.
- 4Read the paperwork before you pay. Vaccination booklet, health certification and ancestry records.
Adoption, honestly
A Cavapoo Singapore adoption listing does appear from time to time, usually an adult and often a poodle cross rather than a Cavapoo exactly. It is the real answer to the cheap searches at the top of this page.
- What you gain: a temperament and a coat you can already see, and a much lower cost.
- What you take on: an unknown health history, and habits formed in another home.
Who a Cavapoo is not right for
- 1 Households out ten hours a day. With nobody to break up the day, this cross suffers and the neighbours hear it.
- 2 Anyone who cannot budget grooming. Every 4 to 6 weeks, for twelve to fifteen years.
- 3 Anyone expecting a cross to be automatically healthy. It inherits from both sides.
- 4 Anyone who needs a predictable coat. A purebred is the more honest choice there.
About the cross
The Cavapoo pairs the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a companion breed bred for affection and an easy temperament, with the Poodle, a working water dog whose coat sheds very little. The appeal is obvious and the trade-offs are the subject of this page.
What it is not is a purebred, and what it does not come with is a promise. Hybrid vigour is real in the sense that a wider gene pool can help, and oversold in the sense that a cross carries the risks of both parents rather than cancelling them.

More curl means more matting, so an F1b is generally more grooming rather than less. It changes the coat, not the health questions.
