Which is calmer, springer or cocker? The cocker, generally, and by a clear margin against a working-line springer. We sell neither springer, so that is information rather than a pitch.
The ears, and the coat that comes with them
This breed carries heavy feathering on the ears, chest, belly and legs. That coat is what the grooming bill pays for, and on the ears it is more than cosmetic.
A long, heavy, hair-covered ear lies flat over the ear canal and keeps it warm and dark. In a climate that is humid all year, and on a dog that gets wet on walks and in baths, that is the part of this breed a household has to build a habit around.
What the coat asks for, week by week
- Look weekly. Lift the ear, look, and smell. You are learning what normal looks like on your dog.

Adoption, honestly
American Cocker Spaniel Singapore rescue is a real search, and dogs of this breed do come up for rehoming here, usually as adults.
The reason is worth saying plainly, because it is the same reason this page leads with housing and grooming: this is a coated, non-HDB breed, and both of those are underestimated at the point of purchase. An adult whose coat and ears you can already assess is a lower-risk dog than any puppy.

About the breed
Bred down in America from the English Cocker Spaniel, the American Cocker was refined as a smaller gundog and, increasingly, a gentle companion.
The American branch of the cocker line was bred toward the show ring and the sofa rather than the field, and the coat is the clearest evidence of it. What you have is a gundog's temperament, biddable and people-focused, wrapped in a coat that no working dog would carry.
